A Private Gym Near You in Durham Region
Retraine is a private training studio at 478 Kingston Rd in Pickering, Ontario. Membership is capped at 24 people, every session is one on one, and access is by appointment. Members drive in from across Durham Region and the east end of the GTA, which tells you something useful: for coached training, the right gym is rarely the closest one.
Where We Are
478 Kingston Rd, Pickering, ON L1V 1A4. Minutes from Highway 401, on-site parking, at coordinates 43.833 N, 79.087 W. Phone 289 388 9650. Training runs by appointment, so there is no peak hour and no waiting list for a rack.
Coming From Around Durham
Ajax
About 10 minutes west to east along Kingston Road or the 401. Ajax members make up a large share of the studio, usually people who tried the local chains, got tired of contested equipment after work, and wanted their hour to be planned before they walked in.
Whitby
Roughly 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic. Whitby members tend to book early morning or mid-morning slots, which is a benefit of appointment-based training: the 6am slot is genuinely yours.
Oshawa
Typically 20 to 30 minutes on the 401. Worth it for members training three to five times a week on a structured block, less sensible if you only want somewhere to do cardio twice a month. We will tell you that honestly at the intro.
Scarborough and east Toronto
Usually 20 to 30 minutes eastbound outside rush hour. Several members train here on the way home from work in the east end precisely because it is against the worst of the traffic.
Markham
Around 30 minutes via the 407 or Brock Road. Most Markham members train two to three times a week in longer sessions rather than five short ones, and the program is written around that.
What "Near Me" Should Actually Mean
Proximity only matters because of adherence, and adherence is not really about distance. It is about whether anyone notices when you do not show up. A gym five minutes away with no appointment and no coach is easy to skip forever. A booked session with a coach who has your file, twenty minutes away, gets completed.
So the number to compare is not kilometres, it is sessions completed per month, and the plan attached to them. We laid out the structural reasons in private studio versus big box gym.
Why Members Drive Past Closer Gyms
Every member here had a cheaper gym within five minutes of their house. The reasons they gave for leaving it are consistent enough to list.
- The 6pm problem. Two racks, forty people, and a workout that becomes whatever equipment happens to be free.
- No plan. A year of showing up and doing roughly the same thing, with nothing measured and no way to know whether it worked.
- Nobody watching. Technique that quietly degrades until something in the lower back objects.
- No consequence for skipping. A membership does not notice your absence. A coach with your file does.
How Booking and Access Work
Sessions are scheduled in advance with your coach, usually as a fixed weekly pattern, so the same slots are held for you. Access is by appointment rather than a swipe card, which is what keeps the floor uncontested. If you travel for work or your shift pattern rotates, say so at the intro and the block gets written around it rather than against it.
What Training Here Involves
A 90-minute assessment, an individualized 12-week block, 60-minute one-on-one sessions with the same coach three to five times a week, conditioning and mobility programmed inside the plan, nutrition handled weekly, and a full re-test every eight weeks. The detail lives on our personal training page.
Book the Intro
The intro is free, takes 45 minutes, and includes a 30-minute movement assessment plus a real first session. Come once, drive the route at the time you would actually train, and judge it against your current gym. No contract, no upsell. Call 289 388 9650, message us on WhatsApp, or book below.
FAQ
Do you take members from outside Pickering?
Yes. Members train here from Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Scarborough, Markham and east Toronto. The studio is at 478 Kingston Rd, minutes from Highway 401, and all training is by appointment so nobody arrives to a queue.
How far is Retraine from Ajax or Whitby?
Ajax is roughly a 10-minute drive and Whitby roughly 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic and where you start. Oshawa and east Scarborough are typically 20 to 30 minutes via the 401 or Kingston Road.
Is there parking at the studio?
Yes, there is parking on site at 478 Kingston Rd. Because sessions are booked in advance, you arrive to a floor that is ready for you rather than to a full lot at 6pm.
Is a 20-minute drive worth it for a gym?
It is if the training is different when you arrive. The question worth asking is not distance, it is how many sessions you complete per month. A booked appointment with a coach produces far better attendance than a closer gym you can skip without anyone noticing.
